Debated port deal still on hold

The much-debated port deal that affects five major East Coast ports was put on hold after critics and lawmakers raised security concerns. Under the planned agreement, P&O, a British company would be acquired by United Arab Emirates-based Dubai Ports World (DP World) for $6.85 billion.

As of February 27th, the deal is under a 45-day review and investigation.

According to the plan, DP World -owned by the emirate of Dubai- would not be in charge of port security. That is handled by federal border agents, the Coast Guard, port authorities and police agencies.

Ports affected by the deal are:

  • The Port of New York/New Jersey
  • The Port of Philadelphia
  • The Maryland Port of Baltimore
  • The Port of New Orleans
  • The Port of Miami
P&O Ports also has facilities in at least 20 U.S. cities, including Corpus Christi, Texas and Portland, Maine.

U.S.-China trade deficit widens

More than one-fourth of the U.S. trade deficit ($726 billion last year) is now accounted for China, at $202 billion. This is the highest U.S. trade deficit with another country. As tensions rise - especially about high Chinese tariffs imposed on American auto parts and continued widespread copyright piracy of American products - Trade Representative Rob Portman announced the creation of a new China enforcement task force in his office. There are also a number of other China-bashing policy proposals on the tables of the Senate and the House.

The European Union’s trade deficit widened to 106.4 billion euros ($127 billion) in 2005 from 62.9 billion euros in 2004. The deficit with China grew in the first 11 months of 2005 to 96.6 billion euros from 72.2 billion euros.
